Tinea Versicolor

An infection of the upper layers of the skin. It appears as uneven skin coloration and scaling. The infection is caused by a yeast-like fungus, which normally lives on the skin surface in small numbers. It thrives in oily areas of the skin such as the neck, upper chest, and back. The infection looks like small and scaly white to tan spots scattered over the affected areas. The spots may also appear on the neck and face.

The infection is easily treated with either topical or oral medications. Topical creams and ointments are applied directly to the skin, either once or twice daily. The uneven color of the skin may remain several months after the fungus has been eliminated. The rash often reappears and to prevent recurrence, special cleansers may have to be used indefinitely.
